Rules of Chess: A Quick Refresher

Chess is played on an 8x8 grid with 16 pieces per player:

1 King
1 Queen
2 Rooks
2 Bishops
2 Knights
8 Pawns

Each piece moves uniquely:

Pawns move forward but capture diagonally.
Knights move in an L-shape.
Bishops move diagonally.
Rooks move in straight lines.
Queens combine rook and bishop movement.
Kings move one square in any direction.

The game ends in checkmate when the king is in a position to be captured (in check) and no legal moves can remove the threat.
