What is Stratego?
Stratego is a two-player strategy board game played on a 10x10 square board. Forty pieces, each representing a soldier's rank in an army, are under the player's control. Finding and capturing the opponent's flag or capturing enough enemy pieces to prevent the opponent from moving is the aim of the game. Since players are unable to see each other's piece ranks, misinformation and discovery are crucial aspects of gameplay.
How to Play Stratego
At the start of the game, each player arranges their 40 pieces on their side of the board in a secret formation. These pieces range from high-ranking officers to lower-ranked soldiers, as well as bombs and scouts. The key pieces include the Flag, which must be protected, and the Spy, which can eliminate the highest-ranking piece—the Marshal—if it strikes first.
During each turn, players move a piece one space (except for scouts, which can move multiple spaces in a straight line). When two opposing pieces occupy the same square, a battle occurs: the piece with the lower rank is removed, while the stronger one remains. If two pieces are of equal rank, both are eliminated. Bombs, unless defused by a miner, are deadly traps that destroy any attacking piece.
The game continues until one player captures the opponent’s flag or forces them into a position where they can no longer make a legal move.
